Husband Stitch may have been more common when episiotomies were routine during vaginal birth. Episiotomy is a surgical cut made in the perineum in the area between the vagina and the anus, usually to widen the vagina hasten birth.


During childbirth, it is uncommon for women to undergo tearing or episiotomies to aid in removal of the infant. But as a result, a disturbing amount of women have found themselves an unintentional recipients of the “Husband Stitch,” an extra stitch added during post-birth repair that is added solely to please the husband. Husband stitch is not an official medical procedure. 


Therefore, this practice is strictly prohibited in the medical world. Until now, there are no studies or medical documents that verify how often husband stitch are performed and how many women receive such illegal act. Most of the information about this practice was also obtained from the victim's confession.
